Articles of Faith

So I have an awesome visiting teaching partner and her name is Amanda. Last month's message was about personal scripture study and Amanda challenged us and the ladies that we visit to be more diligent in doing personal scripture study. Then she shared how she has been teaching her daughter the Articles of Faith and how well her daughter was doing. I thought it was a fantastic idea and of course I wanted to do it too and have been meaning to print the articles of faith so I could teach Olivia.

Yesterday I went to the LDS distribution center which was my first time ever. It was off the hook. People where going in and out and was surprised how many people were there. My main purpose was to buy the soft cover scripture stories for the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Old and New Testament. I have been wanting to purchase them for awhile to help me teach Olivia the scriptures with pictures and teach myself as well. And after General Conference there was a huge emphasis on parental responsibility, teaching kids while they are young, etc. so I decided I better get a move on it. I also found the poster size articles of faith and even though they were a dollar a piece and I probably could have made them for pennies on a computer I thought it would be nice to have a nice big copy on card stock that I could post on the wall. Mike and I decided to do one article a month.

Olivia has done really well and even if she doesn't learn them completely, it will help Mike and I relearn them. I figure it is a win-win situation. We get to learn scriptures together, we are making a habit and we can make it fun. This is usually how the conversation goes when I am teaching Olivia:

Sandy: We believe in God
Olivia: God
Sandy: the eternal father
Olivia: father
Sandy: and in his son
Olivia: son
Sandy: Jesus Christ
Olivia: amen
Sandy: and in the holy ghost
Olivia: ghost

Every time I say Jesus Christ Olivia likes to close it with an amen. I guess she figures we are saying a prayer. I think it is pretty cute. I also wanted to thank Amanda for the great idea.

That is so awesome, Sandy! Isn't it so amazing how quickly they pick up on the words. I have been teaching Abby to the primary song tunes for the A of F's, and it has been really great. I have an extra set of the cd's if you want them. The posters are a great idea, I may have to go pick them up.

Sandy, thanks for your nice comment on my blog. It's really motivating when people notice your hard work.

I saw your ticker on the sidebar... are you the one training for the half marathon?! That's awesome!

I love your ideas for the articles of faith. I didn't even think about trying to teach Hazel anything spiritual, but now that you mention it, these little children are like sponges, so why not fill them up with wonderful things? thanks for the good ideas
