Kicking, Jumping, Punching, Rolling

This is only my second pregnancy but I can definitely say both pregnancies have been so different even though I am having another girl. Olivia rarely moved during the day time or I just didn't notice. She got the hiccups daily. She was breech and I suspect that she didn't ever really move much in the womb.

Baby 2 is a shaker and mover. Even in her ultrasound she was all over the place and the midwife even asked me what I ate for lunch. It doesn't matter what I eat she is always active. Some times it is a jab in the ribs and it is super uncomfortable when I am trying to type at work or I am hunched over doing anything. Then it is like she launches herself off my cervix like a trampoline. And that is a very uncomfortable sensation. While I am thankful for the movements because I know she is alive I wish it wasn't a party 24-7. And my worry is this baby will also be breech and I can just imagine this baby will continue to move around until the very last moment.

BOM Jacob Chapter 5

There have been many times in my life I have attempted to read the Book of Mormon and I didn't progress past 1 Nephi. The first time everything clicked for me was in 2004. I read it and I knew in my heart I wanted to be baptized. In a nutshell the gospel was always out there but I wasn't ready to hear and accept it until then.

Since becoming a convert I have attempted to read the BOM and I have done pretty well if my goal was to get through it. There were several occasions that I felt a certain passage was meant for me to read at that exact moment but I didn't always have this feeling.

I am experiencing right now the feeling of the scriptures and I are really in sync. I am pretty sure it is a side effect of being pregnant because my mind is totally working on hyperdrive. I can't read any LDS material without all these questions, speculations and ideas populating my head. To read the scriptures has been so overwhelming for me so I have limited myself to just 2 chapters. After each chapter I answer the following questions: What is the lesson to be learned and how is it relevant to modern times? Easy enough.

Then I read Jacob Chapter 5. Just Chapter 5. I couldn't take much more the information was so overwhelming. It is the story about the vineyard and the olive tree. I have heard it mentioned in lessons but I felt in my heart that this one chapter had so much meaning and I needed to learn it. So I asked Mike about the meaning of that chapter but he didn't have an answer.

Thankfully we live in the Information Age and everything is a finger tip away. I found an excellent resource that explains just that one chapter in a lot of detail. Who knew I could learn so much from one chapter? I wanted to share the resource for those who might be a little scripture crazy like me: http://www.josephsmith.com/content/Joseph_Smith_Book_of_Mormon/Jacob5.htm

Cheese Sandwich

Last weekend Olivia was hungry so she decided to help herself. She opened the fridge, got a block of cheese out and started eating it. After eating about half of the block she showed me her sandwich. Her cheese sandwich. All I can say is she really loves cheese. I thought it was pretty funny.

Homemade Laundry Detergent

So I finally did it. I made my own laundry detergent. Mike thinks I am crazy at times but I thought it would be worth a try. The savings is quite remarkable if it works. I tried powder for now but I think I might try making the gel version next time just to compare the ease of use.

Then I saw the recipe for homemade dishwasher detergent. But the savings aren't that great but it is nice to know that if I was in a bind I could whip something together.

Productive Weekend

I love productive weekends. Unfortunately they don't happen very often but it is nice when they roll around. The weather was beautiful on Monday and we were able to wash our cars and get them cleaned out. I made bread. I got time to reorganize my food storage. I was able to buy quite a bit of baby food for my food storage. I reorganized my kitchen cabinets. Mike got new tires put on the car.

We actually made it to church which is two weeks in a row and that is like a world record for us. J/K. I was super prepared and had my bag of goodies to keep Olivia occupied. It worked pretty good. She was occupied for 75% of the time. The problem is she naps around 1 pm and that is exactly when church starts. And anyone with toddler aged kids know a sleepy child is unruly and impossible to reason with. I was very very tempted to leave after sacrament meeting and put her down for a nap.

The funny thing is right after sacrament meeting was over. Olivia zipped past me and Mike and all the older members and ran down the hall and waited for us next to the nursery room. I guess her reward to herself is if she can make it through sacrament meeting she gets to go to nursery. What a relief!! I feel bad for the nursery leaders because late church is such a hard time with children that age. They are tired and grumpy and there are a couple of kids that still hate it. Anyone who has that calling really is special.

The ward Mike and I belong to has a lot of older members. The average age in our ward is probably 55-60. And I am probably underestimating. There are a few families around our age but not many. It is a huge change for us since we came from a married student ward and everyone was around the same age but we were all in similar life situations i.e. recently married, maybe a new baby and someone was a student and we were all poor. When we went to church for the first time in November I'll admit that it was quite a turnoff. But I am happy to say that I am actually enjoying it.

We have an awesome Sunday School teacher. I love his teaching style but I always feel the spirit when he teaches. And the older members always have great input about the gospel and life and it is nice to get that variety. I'll be honest. Mike doesn't love church as much as I do and he isn't always excited to be super active. There are also other women in the ward that are married to non-members or not active husbands or converts or come from families where their parent was the first member and it is nice to meet other people who are in similar situations. When we lived in Utah I felt like sort of an outcast because I was a convert and we weren't super active. I definitely felt a lot of pressure.

I just wanted to thank those that gave me encouraging words about Olivia and sacrament. I am glad to know that I am not the only one that has a little stinker at times.

Building Food Storage

With a baby on the way I decided that I should start building baby food storage. While I prefer to make my own baby food sometimes circumstances don't allow it or it is more convenient to use jarred. I prefer organic to regular and I prefer it is in a glass jar versus plastic.

Babies "R" Us is having a great deal on Earth's Best baby food which is my favorite brand. Stage 1 or 2 food - 20 jars for $10 or Stage 3 - 10 jars for $10. Then you can go to Earth's Best's website and print 3 coupons off and if the store will let you stack the coupons you can get an awesome deal.

I am also working on our water storage. Since Mike and I are still in the moving stage of our lives we have decided to go with something smaller and easy to move. When we do find something more permanent, we will more than likely invest in a huge container than can be stored a garage. For now we bought the following containers:

This blog has great tips on food storage but here is a direct link to water storage tips: http://foodstoragemadeeasy.net/babysteps/step-2-water/

Mild Winters

This is a boring post. I did it mostly for an observation of my surroundings and get my thoughts down in writing.

This is my first mild winter. It is different but I think I could get use to it. I grew in Cache Valley so I am use to a ton of snow and freezing weather in January and February. Plus I went to school at USU and worked there for years so I am accustomed to the chilly canyon wind. I do miss the snow I don't really miss the below zero weather or scraping the windshield or warming up the car.

As I write this blog it is raining outside. And this is the norm for Boise winters. The average temperature for January are high 30s. It is suppose to reach the low 40s this weekend which makes it hard for me to want to visit Utah when I know it is so much colder.

Fall is amazing in Logan even along the Wasatch front. The trees turn a brilliant yellow, orange and red. The days are warm the nights are cold. But I can honestly say that fall was amazing in Boise. We live in an older part of town and there are huge trees that line the streets and it was such a beautiful drive to work everyday. And maybe it was an Indian summer this year but Fall seem to last forever. The days were warm and the nights were perfect. It never got cool.

While I do love winter, no snow doesn't leave much room for winter recreational activities and being pregnant makes doing most of them uncomfortable.
So I am looking forward to spring. I am assuming it will come much early than I am use to. I am probably getting ahead of myself but I could really get use to this weather. I know that summer might be killer for me but I'll think about that when it gets here.

Great Finds

I made my first etsy purchase last week. I bought the baby and Olivia some bracelets for very reasonable prices. It is going to be my gift to them when the baby is born. I received the package on Monday and the bracelets were beautiful and the shipping was amazingly fast. This seller also has great handmade beanies for sale which are adorable. Here is the link to her shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/mariamatson

Ideally I would have the time, skill and determination to sew Olivia a quiet book. But I know that won't happen anytime soon. And most quiet books are super pricey but worth every single penny spent. I luckily found one on eBay and won the bid and paid a third of the price. Even though it is used it is in really good condition still.

Truth is Mike and I haven't been to church in ages. We finally started going again and Olivia needs something entertaining to do during sacrament so I am trying to make a bag of goodies to keep her occupied with items she can only play with on Sunday. So if anyone has suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. On the plus side, Olivia really likes nursery. On the downside we have late church which messes up her napping schedule.

Nesting Project 2 - Quiet Books part 1

So I have always been interested in making quiet books for Olivia but I have never had the time or the will power to collect the patterns and actually sew everything. So I am taking baby steps instead of reinventing the wheel. My first goal is the make the easiest books first, then move to the next level and hopefully I will be ready to do a full on material only book.

I found this awesome blog where she has made her prints available. All I had to do is download the prints and get them printed as a photo in the standard 4 x 6 size and bind them together. I ordered the following books:

1. Book of Mormon Stories - http://www.simplyfreshdesigns.com/2010/09/quiet-books-book-of-mormon-stories/
2. Articles of Faith - http://www.simplyfreshdesigns.com/2010/10/lds-prints-articles-of-faith/
3. We Believe - http://www.simplyfreshdesigns.com/2010/10/quiet-books-we-believe/
4. Prophets and Apostles - http://www.simplyfreshdesigns.com/2010/10/quiet-books-prophets-and-apostles/
5. 2011 Primary Monthly Themes - http://www.simplyfreshdesigns.com/2010/12/more-lds-primary-theme-2011/

Even though the books are too old for Olivia to use during church it is a nice baby step for me to feel like I accomplished something. Plus I will probably be able to use them during FHE and general conference or books to read before bedtime. I thought some of you might enjoy

Nesting Project 1 - Carseat Canopy

I made this carseat canopy over the Christmas break. I didn't know the gender of the baby for sure so I wanted to make something gender neutral and instead of paying for fabric my mother-in-law let me pick some from her fabric storage. It is very summery.

My sewing skills are more than beginner but still very basic. I was contemplating to buy one but they are quite pricey in my opinion. I found a pattern that was very simple to follow. Here is the link to pattern that I used: http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2010/04/car-seat-cover-aka-greeter-deterrent.html

Olivia and her Crafts

Mike helped Olivia make the caterpillars. Mike let her paint them.

I made this jingle bell craft with Olivia for Christmas

So we started a new activity in December and that was doing crafts and even though most days it is just coloring with crayons, markers or paint, Olivia has really enjoyed it. I have noticed she really enjoys painting though. And even though Mike or I have to do most of the craft now she does enjoy playing with them afterward. Hopefully she will get more comfortable cutting and gluing.

I get a lot of my ideas from this website: No time for Flash cards - http://www.notimeforflashcards.com/
I bought my supplies based on her list: http://www.notimeforflashcards.com/supply-list

Awesome Bread Pan

One of my frustrations with making bread is it is usually too tall to comfortable fit in a sandwich bag which is pretty inconvenient. I found this awesome bread pan that make longer shorter loaves that are similar to store bought bread. Some people on amazon had to increase their recipes to 1.5 but the recipe I use actually rises really well so I didn't have to modify it at all. I thought this was a great find and I haven't had any problems with sticking either. My dear Olivia

My dear Olivia is growing up so fast. We would like to potty train her and since Mike stays home with her it would be easiest if he was in charge of it for the most part. We did pretty good for the first two days. We were taking small steps letting her wear underwear for a couple of hours each day and rewarding her with stickers for peeing in the toilet. I honestly think she is physically ready but needs a lot of reminding at this point. And I know Mike will be slightly embarrassed for me to write this but I think it is Mike that isn't ready to do the potty training. It is a labor of love and it requires constant discipline. A three day weekend is coming and hopefully I can work with Olivia and get a good foundation down.

So this Christmas Olivia really understood the concept of receiving presents. Two days ago she said to me "Mom, I want a present." Wow. That caught me off guard. Then I had to explain to her that we really only receive presents on our birthday and Christmas. She hasn't asked again so hopefully that answer will suffice.

I bought Olivia two new books on being a big sister and having a new baby in the house and she really enjoys them. Now she calls herself the big sister instead of a big girl or a mom when she plays with her dolls. Hopefully that won't wear off too quickly once the baby arrives.

Olivia loves to help out around the house. I let her help me load the dishwasher, mostly just the silverware. When I cook I will let her help me mix or stir. It takes a lot of patience because a mess usually follows but I figure I should monopolize on this opportunity to make cooking and cleaning fun. Recently she loves to help me wash dishes in the sink. She already loves the water so it should be a given. She drags the kitchen chair over to the sink and helps me scrub the sink and scrub the dishes. She enjoys it but the worst part is when we are done. My goodness she throws a tantrum like I just spanked her butt. All I can say is this is definitely a growing experience for the both of us and I suspect Olivia has had to learn a lot of patience for me as I have with her.

Pregnancy craziness

I have a lot of things I would love to post about but I just don't have the discipline to do it. I also wish I would have taken more pictures but that didn't happen either. But I guess I have to start somewhere.

As of late I feel like a bottomless pit for food. Sigh... I was hoping to not gain too much weigh during this pregnancy, keep it under 40 lbs but Thanksgiving and Christmas aren't friendly too most people let alone a pregnant woman. On the bright side pregnancy sickness has gone away but they have been replace by other pregnancy ailments.

Before New Years I had a long list of things I wanted to accomplish. But just recently I have this strange desire to make a lot of stuff. I know it is nesting but this didn't happen with Olivia this early in the pregnancy. I want to decorate the girls' room, get the nursery ready and pull out clothes but I still have 5 more months. I have been following some sewing blogs and have this new motivation to sew my own stuff. It is weird for me.

Pregnancy brain has really ramped up this month too. Just when I didn't think I could get any dumber, I really surprised myself. The sad thing is I hope the people at my work don't think I am this forgetful. Which leads me to the belly. Before Christmas I could easily hide my belly. Not anymore and it seems like my belly seems to grow overnight. Clothes that fit last week don't fit this week. It seems so small but I hate to spend a fortune on maternity clothes. All the maternity clothes I had were for spring/summer so I am trying to be very creative by layering and buying a few items.

I feel like my brain works a million miles an hour but I can't seem to accomplish much. As you can tell by my post one topic leads to another very very quickly.

There are a lot of external factors going on that I can't control but sometimes worry me. Mike finding an engineering job, the economy, the value of the US dollar, etc. And that is why I love to sleep usually. If I am not having crazy dreams or suffering from insomnia, I don't have to worry about anything.

It's a girl

So we found out yesterday that it was a girl. I was hoping for a boy because Mike was really hoping for a boy. With foot zoning you can tell if it is a boy or girl from about 12 weeks and every time I had checked it was always a girl but I was holding out hope for Mike. Mike wasn't disappointed at all.

Personally I am super super excited. I think it will be really fun for Olivia to have a sister that is so close to her age. I realize that there will be fighting and such but hopefully they can do stuff together and share things when they are older and be great friends when they are older. I have two sisters which is great but we are really really far apart in age (7 and 9 years) and I have always wished we were closer in age for many reasons but one of them being we were never even close to being in the same stage of life. And when I was storing all of Olivia's baby clothes, it really made me want to have another baby girl.

I also love love the birthing center we go too. I really can not believe how different the experience has been and I thought I had a fantastic OB/GYN. With Olivia's ultrasound the tech was going so fast and we just felt so rushed. With this baby the midwife took her time and explained every picture and she spent at least 25 minutes with us so we could see the baby from all views and see how much she was moving. It was so nice. And even though I see a different person every time each midwife takes my appointment as an opportunity to get to know me personally and learn my situation and why I came to the birthing center.
